Discovery School

Scottsville Presbyterian reaches out to the young men studying at The Discovery School of Virginia. We welcome them into our church life as well as attend school events and graduations. Here Pastor Lindsey joins the school’s Tecumseh Group in the huddle hut they have constructed.

Our Outreach to Others in Need

Jesus calls his disciples to provide compassionate care to those in need, saying “When you do it to one of the least of these my brothers, you do it to me.”

Scottsville Presbyterian takes these words of Jesus to heart. Through the years we have reached out to others in need in various ways. Aware that our resources require a targeted focus, we have concentrated on these principal ministries.

The Discovery School of Virginia. The Discovery School of Virginia, located in nearby Buckingham County, provides a supervised setting where young men with emotional or behavior problems can find assistance in working through conflicts to
to a healthier way of relating to other people. Scottsville Presbyterian has established a close relationship with two of the school’s groups. Young men from these group regularly attend worship at Scottsville Presbyterian. Members of the church also regularly engage the young men in work projects.

The Bread of Life Ministry of Scottsville. This is an ecumenical ministry by six of Scottsville churches. It operates a food pantry program for destitute neighbors who need assistance in obtaining food. The pantry is run entirely by volunteers. Scottsville Presbyterian has supported Bread of Life with both monetary contributions and volunteer staffing.

• The Scottsville Mobile Food Pantry. A mobile pantry from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank visits Scottsville twice a month. Once the truck arrives, volunteers step in to unload the food, package it into grocery bags, and distribute it to people in need of emergency food assistance. Many of the volunteers come from local churches, including Scottsville Presbyterian. Click here to read more.

Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels provides hot meals to homebound residents of Albemarle County. The meal is the only hot meal many recipients receive during the day. Some oScottsville Presbyterian’s members serve as volunteer delivery people. We have also donated Blizzard Bags of non-perishable groceries that ensure meal recipients have something to eat when bad weather prevents delivery of a hot meal.
